All I can say is that you would NOT want to lose control of the end of that thing – you’d have the Fire Hose of Death flying all over the place!

Yes, a solar panel puts out more with more intense light, and mirrors are one way of getting it. The two main problems with concentrating solar are 1) how to get rid of the heat, which does damage an ordinary panel, as you suspected; and 2) the need to track the sun, as the bright spot moves with the sun.
About efficiency – I believe in addition to producing more outright, photovoltaic cells actually do get slightly more efficient at super illumination levels, *as long as you can get rid of the heat*.
